Duke comes from the Latin word for leader, and the duchess is the duke's wife. She outranks everyone but the queen, and is wearing an outfit to prove it. This peacock blue, floor-length dress is made of panne velvet. Its square neckline is trimmed with lacy, antique gold braid, and the bodice insert is black lace with a glittering gold pattern backed by an antique gold solid and topped with a petite bow. The elegant, elbow-length sleeves have a wide, white lace ruffle and bows that match the one on the bodice. The waist above the very full skirt is also trimmed in antique gold braid. This dress includes a modern version of the farthingale: hip padding to wear underneath to give this Duchess dress the wide-hipped silhouette that was the fashion trend of the period
