A Geisha is not a love servant (like the Tayu), but rather a Japanese entertainer who performs traditional Japanese arts e.g. has skills in singing and dancing. In the past, the geisha was distinguished from the tayu by the way the wide girdle (obi) was worn. While the geisha wore the obi tied at the back (which could only be managed with the help of a dresser), the tayu tied the obi at the front so that she could take it off and put it on by herself (for her suitors).
