A fibula is a metal, brooch-like pin for a robe that functions like a safety pin. Fibulae were widely used until the late Middle Ages to fasten everyday gowns, noble robes or generously cut cloaks together. Buttons finally replaced fibulae in the 13th and 14th century when clothes started to fit more snugly. Our Golden Brooch is not a fibula; it is an eye catcher with finely drawn decoration.
