On the Comédie Italienne stage, Pierrot was the historical forerunner of the modern loser. He pined and sighed his way through many a play because he had lost his Columbine to Harlequin. Traditionally, his face is painted white and he wears extremely wide trousers. Our Pierrot is obviously French: his outfit is a sophisticated (for a clown, that is) mixture of red, white and blue. The red and black top with a huge, attached tie in a colorful diamond pattern would look right at home on the Rive Gauche. The clowning glory? The drooping, red and black version of a Napoleon hat, complete with cockade. Whether happy or sad: Pierrot really has his own sense of style!
