Hardly any other being is as mysterious and difficult to pin down as the Phantom. In the 1986 Phantom of the Opera musical, he appears for the first time in months as the Red Death at the Opera's own masquerade ball. In his opulent costume of scarlet & gold, he attracts a lot of attention. The sleeves of the doublet are slashed in four places, edged with gold, and lined with glittering magenta net. The deep cuffs are trimmed with gold and fasten with hook and loop strips. A checkered panel in gold & glittering magenta decorates the chest. The doublet skirt is slit at the front and back to reveal breeches in scarlet velvet with an elasticized waistband. They are trimmed with diagonal stripes of gold braid and have a gathered inset of glittering magenta net above the knees. The breeches end in gold-edged ruffles. The hat has a dramatic, approx. 20.5 cm wide brim and is richly decorated with gold trim, gold ornament and large magenta sequins. The sweeping cape with a wide collar is in scarlet velvet lined with magenta fabric and edged in gold. It is sewn to one shoulder and attached to the other one with a hook and loop strip for easy access to the doublet, which has hook and loop strips at the back. A golden, ruffled jabot and scarlet boot tops in imitation leather complete this stunning, operatic Phantom costume.
