The original St. Nicholas was a Greek Orthodox bishop who lived in what is now Turkey. Today, St. Nicholas' appearance kicks off the Christmas season, especially in the Netherlands – although the Italians celebrate his holiday in May! Hats off to gift giving! Of course that doesn't include St. Nicholas' elegant miter, his classic bishop's head covering. His red cloak is lined with golden fabric and decorated with golden fringe – just like his red and gold stole. In combination with the pure white robe, this St. Nicholas looks extra holy.
