The original St. Nicholas was a Greek Orthodox bishop who lived in what is now Turkey. His prayers prevented innocent men from being executed and he was famous for giving money to the poor and other acts of charity. Today, St. Nicholas' appearance kicks off the Christmas season, especially in the Netherlands – although the Italians celebrate his holiday in May! Hats off to gift giving! Of course that doesn't include St. Nicholas' miter, his classic bishop's head covering. In this splendid red cloak with golden trim and red and gold stole, this St. Nicholas looks like he has bottomless pockets.
