In the late 16th century, Queen Elizabeth I developed England's own permanent fleet of warships to counter the Spanish Armada. The fame of the Royal Navy was based on the heroic deeds of daring admirals such as Horatio Nelson. Fleet admirals had to be highly visible during battles so their commands could not be misunderstood. This English Fleet Admiral's frock coat screams "Here I am" in red and gold. One working row of golden buttons and one decorative row adorn the front. The standing collar, cuffs and epaulets are trimmed in thick gold braid, and golden fringe accents the epaulets. The knee-length coat tails are lined in white to blend in with the crisp, white trousers, and a shiny, marine blue sash with a gleaming clasp (not shown) tops off this ship shape outfit. Ahoy and full speed ahead!
