A geisha is a female Japanese entertainer who presents traditional Japanese performing arts in a private setting and not a courtesan (called "tayu" in Japan). In the old days, you could tell a geisha from a tayu by the widths of their respective obi sashes. Geishas wear their sashes tied at the back (something they need help with), while tayus tie them at the front so they can put them on and remove them without help.
An obi sash is part of this 6-piece black geisha costume, and you can put it on alone because it fastens with simple hook and loop strips. It is worn over the koshi-himo, a small belt used to gather up the kimono to the required length and is covered over by the obi, and the kimono itself. The characteristic pillow that is fastened to the back of the obi (here, black), is decorated with a golden bow. The kimono has a black background decorated with a delicate floral pattern and fastens at the front with snaps. The golden shoes and hair jewelry shaped like a large bow round out this black geisha costume. Enchanting!
