PLEASE NOTE: Because our Italian Doublet is not mass produced, the pattern of the Jacquard trim may vary. But this means that each one is a unique period garment!
The "Italian" in the name of our doublet stands for the cut and the region in which it might have been worn. Between 1494-1559, eight battles were fought in present-day Italy. What started out as a dispute between Naples and Milan soon involved the armies of France, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire – and even England towards the end. In the late 15th and early 16th centuries, the German and Swiss mercenary soldiers who fought in Italy – and their commanders – would have worn doublets in this style. Our fully lined Italian Doublet has padding to make your shoulders seem particularly broad. In soft, 100 percent cotton velvet, this doublet features the long, slashed sleeves typical of the period. They end in narrow cuffs with ties to fasten them. The neckline is cut in a roomy oval to show the shirt collar underneath to advantage, and fastens with one decorative, silver button at the throat. A row of four matching buttons fastens the doublet at the waist. The skirt is slit at the front, back and sides, and trimmed with the same decorative Jacquard trim used on the cuffs and front seams. Ideal worn over a white linen shirt with billowing sleeves.
Material: 100% cotton
