Hoplites were not only the professional soldiers of Sparta, this was what soldiers in all of the armies of ancient Greece were called. Depending on the epoch and region, different types of helmets were part of their standard equipment – however, the Corinthian form slowly but surely became the standard helmet. This type was first used at the beginning of the 7th century. It surely became so popular because it was shaped according to the human head. The cheek pieces and nasal did have a negative impact on seeing and breathing, but it provided much better protection than the helmets that had gone before it. A high crest with horsehair dyed red made the soldier wearing a hoplite helmet seem much taller and more threatening – which was also a reason for the success of the Corinthian hoplites.
Our Hoplite Helmet is made of high quality, 18 gauge bronze and has a genuine leather liner so it can be adjusted to fit any head. The crest is a wooden base covered with bronze. The red-dyed horsehair attached to it is approx. 10 centimeters long. Two openings are provided to attach and remove the crest from the scull of the helmet.
This hoplite helmet weighs approx. 2.85 kg (approx. 1.91 kg without crest).
