Pirates, peasants, pagans, and princesses all know that the proper shoes or boots can add the convincing final touch to any costume. Do we mourn the passing of leather as the main material for shoes and boots? No, not at all. Modern, manmade shoe and boot materials can be processed in a variety of creative ways that all add up to inexpensive FUN, regardless of whether crazy colors, fantastic forms or daring decoration are the main attraction. And if you want historical accuracy, reach into your wallet and then reach out for tried and true leather shoes.
What about the Romans? Yes, they also wore shoes made of leather strips with flat soles. Our simple Roman shoes were ideal for the warm, dry climate of ancient Rome. They have a shaft height of approx. 39 cm and are made of 4 vertical strips of imitation leather bound by 3 horizontal rings and an arch at the front. They have a round stud at each intersection at the front and a 37.5-cm-long zipper at the back. Of course the zipper is not authentic Roman – they were first patented in 1917!
