Bishops and other leaders of the world's major Christian churches wear miters, the headgear with a millennium-old tradition. A miter is basically a tall, folding cap made of stiffened silk, linen or cotton that comes to a rounded point at the top and has two lappets at the back. Miters provide the ideal surface (large and highly visible) for elaborate decoration. St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, thieves, and children, is the only bishop who wears a red miter in Roman Catholic iconography.
